On behalf of the University of California Hastings College of the Law, welcome to the Admissions website. The information contained within our site is designed to provide facts about UC Hastings and answer general questions regarding admissions. If you are in the Bay Area or planning a trip to San Francisco during the school year, we encourage you to visit a first-year class and take a student-guided tour.

UC Hastings’ central location and its strong community links to many of the Bay Area’s multicultural neighborhoods offer students an educational experience which is virtually unlimited in its breadth and diversity. Judicial externships, five law concentrations, clinical programs, concurrent degree programs, study abroad programs, law journals, and a strong alumni network help provide students with a range of opportunities within the legal community.

A goal of the general admissions selection process is to identify and enroll individuals who will flourish in the College’s rigorous and multifaceted academic program.  A variety of factors such as work experience, extracurricular and community service activities, academic preparedness, and standardized testing results will all be considered when evaluating an applicant’s file.

In addition to its general admissions process, UC Hastings offers admission through its Legal Education Opportunity Program.  In considering applicants, the LEOP Admissions Committee reviews a variety of factors, recognizing that traditional academic indicators alone might not be sufficient to assess the academic potential of students from nontraditional backgrounds. For more information about LEOP click here.

When applying for first year admission, applicants have two choices:

  1. Early Decision Option–October 1 to November 15. EDO is a binding admissions program. For more information and requirements click here.
  2. Regular Admissions–October 1 to March 1. Operates on a rolling admissions basis that begins once EDO decisions are complete in the fall.

LEOP applicants may apply either EDO or regular admissions.

If you require additional information or clarification, please email us at or phone (415) 565-4623. Thank you for your interest in UC Hastings. We look forward to hearing from you in the near future.

Director of Admissions
