The Freedom to Shape Our Own Directions. Hastings Chancellor and Dean Mary Kay Kane is one of the nation's most highly regarded authorities in civil procedure. In 2001 she served as President of the American Association of Law Schools, the major national law school association. Chancellor Kane's expertise is reflected in her published works. They include Nutshell on Civil Procedure, Hornbook on Civil Procedure and Federal Practice and Procedure. A faculty member at Hastings since 1977, she became associate academic dean in 1980 and rose through the ranks to become dean in 1993. She noted that Hastings is the only public free-standing law school in the nation. "Unlike law schools on most campuses, we are free to shape our own direction on our own terms. We enjoy a modern metropolitan campus, an extraordinarily rich array of course offerings and clinics, and indisputably one of the strongest faculties in the nation."
