At the
latest tally, alumni from UC Hastings now number some 16,000, with 80
percent residing in California.
The
membership also includes 450 judges representing federal, state, and
municipal benches. Judge Melvin Brunetti '64, for example, is a member
of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit. Marvin Baxter '66, is
an Associate Justice of the California Supreme Court.
On the
West Coast, UC Hastings' presence is significant. Alumni are partners in
many of the major law firms, serve as corporate counsel, and are in
individual practices up and down the California coast. A sampling
includes M. Wainwright Fisburn '81, a founding partner of Cooley
Godward's San Diego office; Nanci Clarence '85, a partner with Clarence
& Snell; Donald Bradley '68, a partner with Wilson, Sonsini,
Goodrich & Rosati; Nestor Barrero '84, Vice President - Employment
Counsel for Universal Studios; Robert Tafoya '78, a solo practitioner;
and Michael E. Klingler '73, a mediator/arbitrator.
A host of
elected and appointed figures serving in city, state, and national
governmental offices trace their legal education to UC Hastings. Among
them are Ann Veneman '76, U.S. Secretary of Agriculture; Jackie Speier
'76, California State Senator; Willie L. Brown, Jr. '58, Mayor of San
Francisco; Mara Rosales '82, General Counsel for the San Francisco
International Airport; Robert Matsui '66, a U.S. Congressman from the
5th Congressional District, Sacramento; Terence Hallinan '64, San
Francisco District Attorney; and Jonathan P. Lowell '85, City Attorney
for San Bruno, California.
Among the
non-legal fields, UC Hastings graduates include Richard Thalheimer '74,
CEO of The Sharper Image; Nancy Tellem '79, CBS Entertainment President;
Adam Wasserman '95, founder of ExamSoft Worldwide, Inc.; and Nicholas
Moore '67, Chairman of PricewaterhouseCoopers.
An Intellectual Property Practice
Tim Alan Covington '85 is a licensing partner in the Intellectual
Property Group of Fenwick & West, a Silicon Valley-based law firm
specializing in high-technology matters. His practice includes advising
in intellectual property protection (including copyrights, trade
secrets, and trademarks), counseling in product marketing and licensing
strategies, and negotiating complex business relationships. Mr.
Covington is a frequent speaker on the topics of software and
semi-conductor technology licensing and trends in emerging
high-technology industries, including interactive new media, electronic
financial transactions, and the Internet. He has been a guest lecturer
at UC Hastings and Boalt Hall School of Law and at Stanford University's
graduate business and engineering associations.
Career District Attorney
Michael D. Bradbury is District Attorney of Ventura County, California,
whose office he has served almost continuously since graduating from UC
Hastings in 1967. Beginning as a law clerk, he was appointed a Deputy
District Attorney shortly thereafter, and, after a brief period in
private practice, returned as Assistant Chief Trial Deputy, and
subsequently was appointed Chief Trial Deputy and then Chief Assistant
District Attorney. Elected District Attorney in 1978, he has been
re-elected four times without opposition. Former President of the
California District Attorneys Association, Mr. Bradbury is a member of
the Editorial Review Board and frequent contributor to Prosecutors
Perspective, American Prosecutors Research Institute.
