The law is a dynamic force in American society, setting the standards for our own time and often anticipating changes in the times ahead. Sometimes flawed, the law has the capability to redress its imperfections in the interests of justice and equity. This creative tension between what is and what can be is a defining characteristic in the high-voltage legal education we have shaped at UC Hastings. We raise questions, debate issues, challenge fixed notions, explore options - all in the interest of understanding the law as neither static nor passive, but resonating from the often conflicting social, political, and economic forces that shape our lives. Indeed, UC Hastings takes an interdisciplinary view of the law in an atmosphere defined by tradition, but unlimited by convention. A Healthy Competition for Good Ideas
This culture flourishes at UC Hastings because of differences, not conformity. Our students vary in age from 19 to 50. African-Americans, Hispanics, Asian-Americans, and Native Americans number more than 30 percent of the population. The male-female ratio is generally balanced. Add to that a faculty equally varied in age, interests, experience, and background, and you have a campus enveloped at times with feisty differences, yet rooted in civility and mutual respect. That makes for unforgettable lessons in the law. The Juris Doctor program at UC Hastings is a three-year, full-time education in the law requiring 86 credits and a 2.0 grade point average to qualify for a degree. The legal education you receive at Hastings is a window to the breadth and diversity of the law. It provides both a focus on the fundamentals and a wider view to explore special areas of study. The College is home to law-related organizations to keep your interest heightened and support programs to keep you on track. You get a practical dimension in skills courses and legal experiences in clinical internships and judicial externships. The real distinction in our legal education program comes from our faculty, whose scholarship and teaching credentials are difficult to surpass anywhere in the nation and whose relationship with students is one of the most congenial and instructive of any law school faculty. To help familiarize you with the courthouses, law firms, government agencies, and public interest organizations where the law is fashioned and formulated, we provide the career services that acquaint you with the legal and non-legal arenas that best suit your professional goals.
